Biography of Dr Luís María R. Calingo
Luís María R. Calingo
(Ph.D., University of Pittsburgh, 1984) is the President of Woodbury University
(Burbank and San Diego, California). He
was previously Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer of the Dominican
University of California after serving as business dean at Dominican University
of California, John Carroll University, California State University at Long
Beach (CSULB), and California State University at Fresno. He held faculty appointments at the Monterey
Institute of International Studies as professor of international management; Nanyang
Technological University (Singapore) as program director and division head;
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia as visiting research fellow; and the University
of the Philippines (UP) as visiting professor of business policy.
As technical expert to
the Asian Productivity Organization (APO), Dr. Calingo has assisted the
governments of Indonesia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand,
and Vietnam in the establishment of their national awards for quality and
business excellence that are based on the US Malcolm Baldrige National Quality
Award. The APO and the Fulbright Program
had also engaged his services to assist in the infusion of quality management
into higher education in Asia, notably the Philippines and Thailand. He has also served as a consultant in
strategic planning and Baldrige-based organizational assessments to numerous
organizations in the United States and Southeast Asia. In the USA, he also helped several school
districts (including Pearl River School District, 2001 Baldrige Award
recipient) and higher education institutions in implementing the Baldrige Award
framework. Under his leadership, the
business school at CSULB received the 2001 California Prospector Award—the only
California business school to have received Baldrige-based recognition—and
became the 8th largest business school in the USA.
Dr. Calingo contributes a
significant amount of time not only to the APO, but also to the Baldrige
Performance Excellence Program. He serves
as an Alumni Examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (having first
been appointed to the Board of Examiners in 1997); in that capacity, he has
mentored new examiners, led teams and coached new team leaders. He had also served on the Board of Directors
of the California Council for Excellence (2002-2006), as well as Examiner for
the California Award for Performance Excellence (1997-1999) and the Singapore
Quality Award (1995/96). He developed and,
from 1998 to 2003, provided the first Baldrige Award Self-Assessment Training
for Education seminar offered by the American Society for Quality (ASQ)—the
administrator of the Baldrige Award—to promote the Baldrige framework to the
education sector.
Dr. Calingo serves on the
Boards of Directors of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of San Francisco
<www.cccyo.org>, North Bay Leadership Council <www.nblc.org>, and of
LeadershipTraQ in Southern California <www.leadershiptraq.com>; and was
Founding Director of the Ukleja Center for Ethical Leadership in Long Beach,
California <www.ucel.org>. The

the Distinguished Alumnus Award in Industrial Engineering award during the
University of the Philippines Centennial Year (2008).
